<b>Paint, plus a new digital scanner!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We continue to improve the Grand Blanc branch as Summer progresses, the latest changes being the newly painted reading room and the installation of a new Library Document Scanner (LDS). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Words of inspiration will be added to the blue stripe along the wall, in large while letters in fun fonts, which will create a more welcoming, cozy place to read and study. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sc_Sc3n3MNg/Vaf2V6N5P2I/AAAAAAAAApw/3gWXTRric7I/s1600/Scanner1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sc_Sc3n3MNg/Vaf2V6N5P2I/AAAAAAAAApw/3gWXTRric7I/s320/Scanner1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">New Scanner near PC Lab</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the last 2 years or so the Grand Blanc branch had a portable digital scanner which was complicated and not easily understood by library staff or the community. It worked, but it wasn't ideal. When we decided what improvements would be made using the generous gift by Dr. and Mrs. Claffey, an easy to use, self-serve scanner was on the list to modernize our services. <b>It is already saving time and money for our patrons. In the middle of typing this post I helped a patron send her scanned document via email and saved her the cost of faxing!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what can this scanner do? After scanning your document, you have the choice of <b>emailing</b> it to yourself or others or <b>saving</b> it to a USB/Flash drive (you can see the USB drive between the screen and scanner above). Previously you had to scan one page at a time, which was time-consuming, but this new machine has a <b>top-feeder</b> which allows you to scan many pages at once at the touch of a button. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Documents or photos can be saved as <b>PDF, JPEG, or TIF</b> files, and the color and quality can also be adjusted. In addition, the scanner also acts as a <b>back-up printer</b> if the main Xerox machine is in use. Copies at this machine are also 10 cents. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last benefit is the ability to convert a document into Microsoft Word (.doc) format. We see many people who have a printed copy of their resume, but don't have a corresponding electronic copy. Previously this meant they have to retype the resume from scratch if they wanted to make changes, but this this scanner will make that unnecessary. Stop by to check it out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Now that the Children's Room is completed, our focus has shifted to both the <strong>Teen Room</strong> and sitting area<strong> near the newspapers and magazines</strong>. Just this week library staff came together and reviewed <strong>furniture</strong> options for each of these spaces. Also in progress is a vast collection of <strong>modern signage</strong> which will appear in all areas of the library. It will help people new to our building efficiently locate exactly what they need. As always, stay tuned for future updates!</div>

<strong>Children's Room Progress!</strong></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
On Monday and Tuesday of this week the carpeting was installed in our children's room! The funding for this carpet was generously donated by the <a href="https://www.cfgf.org/cfgf/CommunityFunds/GrandBlancCommunityFund/tabid/650/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Grand Blanc Community Fund</a>, part of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. We are tremendously grateful for this gift! </div>

With the carpet laid, the design team can move forward with the interior remodel of both the children and teen spaces. The children's shelving units you see above will be lowered for ease of access and provide an unobstructed view across the room. We are also gaining children's computer stations and additional seating space for our growing community. Keep checking back for more updates!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's been quite a while since we last updated you on the progress of our renovation. There have been some issues that have arisen which have slowed us down, mainly in the Children's area, which are preventing the carpet from being laid. Because some shelving from the Children's room will be used in the new Teen space, the Teen renovations have also been paused. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hopefully the carpet will be laid soon and the renovations will be completed by the end of March. We appreciate your continued patience as we expand and improve your library!</div>

<strong>Interior Renovation Continues</strong></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's been a while since we last posted about the ongoing renovations here at the library. If you've been in lately, you're well aware that we're not finished yet, but there has been considerable progress. Check out the photos below!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZgUtOaFNFxw/VLF2x1MvMhI/AAAAAAAAAms/SGvg-O6nWSQ/s1600/New%2BHall%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZgUtOaFNFxw/VLF2x1MvMhI/AAAAAAAAAms/SGvg-O6nWSQ/s1600/New%2BHall%2B1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ns1Zo81T3dU/VLF2x7ITHuI/AAAAAAAAAmo/KiyxIFO1ltw/s1600/New%2BHall%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ns1Zo81T3dU/VLF2x7ITHuI/AAAAAAAAAmo/KiyxIFO1ltw/s1600/New%2BHall%2B2.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You'll notice our new, larger computer lab which consists of new chairs, tables, and wider monitors. With the tall book cases gone the hall is not only more spacious, but much brighter! We are also adding 4 computers which will arrive soon. The counter along the wall in the second photo will house the printer and new, user-friendly, scanning station. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The old computer lab has already been cleared and will become space for our teen fiction collection. The closet has also been emptied and will become the staging area used by our shelvers to sort items before they are shelved. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">New Sitting Area</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Years ago the area above was a sitting area and since the teen material will be moved, this again will be used to house our newspapers and other magazines. Staff and patrons enjoy the large picture window we have looking toward Perry Road and now it can be enjoyed more fully while you read. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Main Reading Room</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The main reading room has also seen some changes which we think you'll enjoy. First, our large paperback collection has been moved to regular upright shelving, so you'll no longer need to spin the racks to locate a specific book. The collection remains in order by genre. With all of these standing spinning racks gone, we were able to increase the seating in this room by 10 or more by using the two tables which had been in the hall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fiction book shelves were also altered and you'll notice that there are more of them. The reference collection, as well as the paperbacks were moved to this area. The study booths from the hall can also be found in this room and will be electrified soon to provide outlets for laptops and other devices. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The new children's addition is also progressing nicely, but with the false wall between us and the new area, a photo isn't possible at this time. The construction part of the children's addition will continue for several weeks, after which the interior crew will take over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stay warm!</div>

<span style="font-size: small;">Interior Renovations Begin!</span></h2>
<div align="left">
While the exterior work continues, the big change this week at the library is the start of our planned interior improvements. During the next couple weeks you'll notice additional noise as the crew reconfigures shelving and shifts material around the building. Our priority is to provide <strong>uninterrupted service </strong>during this time of transition, so the library will remain fully open. </div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
Here's a summary of what you'll notice this week:</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<div align="left">
1. All public computers will be moved into the hall leading toward the business center, taking the place of our audio book collection. Audio books have been relocated to the <strong>START</strong> of the non-fiction section. The audio books will remain here going forward. We will also receive an additional 4 computers to reduce the time you wait for a terminal during peak hours for a total of 21 in the branch.</div>
<div align="left">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Workers assembling the new computer desks</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="left">
2. The reference collection and paperbacks in rotating racks that currently occupy a large area in the large reading room will be moved to upright shelving alongside the fiction. You'll notice that the shelving in the hall was removed; this will be repurposed in the reading room to hold the paperbacks and reference collection. The existing fiction shelving will also be shortened to create additional floor space. With the rotating paperback racks and short reference shelves removed, this will create better flow in the room. The low shelves in the foreground and the spinning wood racks on the right of the below picture will be removed.</div>
<div align="center">

3. Our large collection of movies and television series will be moved to the reading room. Every DVD will now be placed on a shelf which will make locating exactly what you're looking for that much easier. The current location of our DVD collection, in front of the large picture window, will become a sitting area to browse our print magazine collection. </div>

4. The Children's Room now contains a temporary wall to shield patrons from the work going on to connect the new children's addition and the existing building. So, this room is a little tight for the time being, but be assured it will be much larger once the construction is complete!</div>

<b>Fall is Construction Season</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
October 20 Update</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you've been to the library in the past few days you know that the construction has begun for our <b>two</b> new building additions, both made possible by Dr. & Mrs. Claffey! One addition will expand Community Room, the other will create new space for our lively Children's Room. The business blog will document the changes and post photos as the construction progresses. This expansion project is going to greatly benefit the library and our community. During this period, which will continue into January, the circle drive on the West side of the building won't be accessible, but the large lot in the back won't be affected. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In addition to the building expansion, the <b>interior</b> of McFarlen Library will also be transformed in the coming months. Our teens will gain a dedicated room and existing library space will be organized to maximize existing square footage. Look for these changes to begin sometime in November. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Your Library Card Is More Valuable Than Ever<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zAVGMYpt8wo/U16krrJy9TI/AAAAAAAAAfY/W1gdbx0txew/s1600/GDL+Card-NEW.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zAVGMYpt8wo/U16krrJy9TI/AAAAAAAAAfY/W1gdbx0txew/s1600/GDL+Card-NEW.png" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When you think "library card" it's natural for our minds to jump to printed books. While this remains accurate, it's only a fraction of what <b>Genesee District Library</b> makes available to you at no charge. Thousands of e-books are downloaded every month to kindles and tablets of all kinds, and our new magazine service, Zinio, offers you over 100 magazine subscriptions for download to your PC/Mac or tablet. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Further down the list of what you might expect your library to provide is<b> investment information</b>. More often than not, when people stop by the business center and see the collection of over 3,500 books, they are most surprised by the extensive selection of investment titles. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and investment strategies for the novice or expert are all covered and readily available. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What's more, GDL also provides access to trusted, unbiased, and current stock and fund analysis via Morningstar Investment Research Center, ValueLine, and Mergent Archives, all conveniently available from your home computer via the <a href="https://www.thegdl.org/index.php/resources/personal-finance" target="_blank">Personal Finance</a> resources link on our homepage. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Using Morningstar you can search and compare funds, read the latest analyst reports for the fund family, or enter a ticker symbol for 1 page company stock summaries. Wanting to learn more? Click on Morningstar's "Help & Education" tab for investment tutorials, or select the "Newsletters" tab for a in-depth selection of monthly reports for stocks, mutual funds, dividend investing, or ETFs. <br />
<br />
Morningstar is also hosting several free live-streaming investment seminars this year, all of which will be available in the Grand Blanc branch's Community Room. The next seminar is Thursday, June 19 @ 6:00 PM, and the topic will be Dividend Paying Stocks. Click <a href="https://www.thegdl.org/index.php/events/all-events/event/1051-live-online-session-on-retirement" target="_blank">here</a> to make a reservation. </div>

ValueLine is another popular library resource that provides stock and company analysis. Check out the companies highlighted in each week's Ratings & Reports, or read market analysis in the "Selection & Opinion" pages. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Mergent Archives, available via the <a href="https://www.thegdl.org/index.php/resources/business-center" target="_blank">Business Center Resources</a> tab on our homepage, provides additional research from Ford Equity Research, a Mergent Company. Check the latest recommendation of a current or prospective stock, or search for recommended buys, sells, or holds from Ford Equity. Want to add a specific industry to your portfolio? Tailor your equity search by limiting market cap, recommendation type, and/or industry to find exactly what you need.<br />
<br />
Again, these resources are updated regularly and available from your home computer with a valid GDL library card. Don't have one yet? Stop by any branch and sign up today.<br />

<br />
Genesee District Library is committed to increasing the financial literacy of Genesee County residents and preparing them (you!) to make informed decisions concerning money. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this first of several posts, we'll explore some<b> introductory resources for the beginning investor</b>. Not sure where to start? Let us help! Click below to read full post.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Getting Started</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you're confused by the stock market or what exactly all those commentators on CNBC are talking about, you're not alone. The financial industry is steeped in jargon<b> </b>and endless acronyms and it would be easy for the beginner to feel shut-out. Luckily, there are many resources available to assist you as you explore the markets and consider whether investing is right for you. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First,<b> be mindful of what you read</b>. Not everyone wishes to provide unbiased information (especially investment firms). GDL is committed to providing investment information not written by individuals selling the products about which they write. Two significant resources for introductory information is the <a href="http://www.finra.org/Investors/SmartInvesting/index.htm" target="_blank">Financial Industry Regulatory Authority</a> (FINRA) and the <a href="http://www.sec.gov/investor#.U0LJj6Prdic" target="_blank">Securities and Exchange Commission</a> (SEC). Both FINRA and the SEC regulate the financial industry, and both sites are a great place to start.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0HtFNsimg1g/U0MIh5eH_TI/AAAAAAAAAeE/0QONpJ283Ns/s1600/FINRA+logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0HtFNsimg1g/U0MIh5eH_TI/AAAAAAAAAeE/0QONpJ283Ns/s1600/FINRA+logo.png" height="115" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The FINRA link takes you to their "Smart Investing" information which is easy to understand. FINRA also provides information on all licensed stock brokers and traders via their <a href="http://www.finra.org/Investors/ToolsCalculators/BrokerCheck/" target="_blank">BrokerCheck</a> tool. If you decide to utilize an investment professional, be sure to check their credentials first, to reduce the risk you are being scammed. <br />
<br />
Second, <b>read as much as possible</b> before giving money to anyone. Investing is always risky, no matter what anyone leads you to believe. In fact, if someone promises a big return on your investment, be wary, it might be a scam. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zDzEdl0HuHo/U0LAv49PzMI/AAAAAAAAAdw/c9PESm2OxZw/s1600/Investopedia.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zDzEdl0HuHo/U0LAv49PzMI/AAAAAAAAAdw/c9PESm2OxZw/s1600/Investopedia.png" height="44" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
As I mentioned earlier, there are countless terms, acronyms, and abbreviations in the finance world. Try using Investopedia's free online <a href="http://www.investopedia.com/dictionary/" target="_blank">dictionary</a><b> </b>for further explanation if you come across an unfamiliar concept. In addition to the online resources listed above, there are many books perfect for the new investor, some I have shown below. The <b>GDL Business Center</b>, located in the Grand Blanc branch, houses extensive print resources to<b> </b>explain the many different investment types. Some are general, such as <i>Investing for Dummies</i>, while others are more focused (<i>How to Select Winning Stocks</i>). Below is a small sampling of titles for the new investor, all currently available in the business center collection. </div>

<b>2014 Brings Additional Resources for Our Patrons</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last year was a great year for Genesee District Library and the Business Center. Our electronic books and music service through <b>Overdrive</b> continues to grow in popularity and many more are discovering this new service each month. If you received a tablet or e-reader over the holidays, check out GDL's <b><a href="http://digital.thegdl.org/78F5DDB6-0843-4FB7-9061-BE3992A09545/10/50/en/Default.htm" target="_blank">Digital Branch</a> </b>to search our e-book collection and download your next great read. It's available 24/7 using your library bar code and PIN. The Business Center became a certified <b>Business Resource Center</b> through the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) through Kettering University, and we have continued to partner with local organizations to provide <b>free business counseling</b> to local entrepreneurs. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This year looks to be even better, as GDL has several exciting new resources coming available for the business owner / entrepreneur and investor, in addition to free online access to your favorite magazine. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y7DF_SEAXOc/UshdvlGrwUI/AAAAAAAAAbc/5QnXkGJWN0U/s1600/KBR.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y7DF_SEAXOc/UshdvlGrwUI/AAAAAAAAAbc/5QnXkGJWN0U/s1600/KBR.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First, for business owners and entrepreneurs completing their business plan, we will being offering access to two Mergent resources:<b> Key Business Ratios</b> and <b>First Research</b>. Key Business Ratios (KBR) was purchased to facilitate more accurate price and cost estimating and provide industry benchmarks. Estimating costs and determining a sensible pricing structure is essential to any well-written business plan and this database will aid in this process. <b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XjMZGuBrIAc/UshegmjxLEI/AAAAAAAAAbs/-P_yLR7GXeY/s1600/MergentFirstResearch.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XjMZGuBrIAc/UshegmjxLEI/AAAAAAAAAbs/-P_yLR7GXeY/s1600/MergentFirstResearch.gif" /></a></b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>First Research</b>, also beneficial to the aspiring business owner, provides market-specific information for more than 900 industries. Currently having access to industry trends for large sectors through Mergent Archives, First Research will help business patrons hone their research by individual industry, in addition to Census information which is currently available.These Mergent products should be available starting mid-January; links to each will be available via the <b><a href="https://www.thegdl.org/index.php/resources/business-center" target="_blank">Business Center Resources</a></b> page. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Equifax, with TransUnion, and Experian (mentioned below) make up the Big 3 Bureaus</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A few weeks back Financial Plus Federal Credit Union held a seminar here at the Grand Blanc branch outlining steps to protect your identity and what to do if it is stolen. It was an informative program and one bit of information I learned really bothered me, not only because demographic information like spending habits, age, and likely income was being sold, but that it is the very organizations that help us fight ID theft which offer it for sale.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, the big 3 credit bureaus where our credit histories are stored and our credit scores calculated each offer, for a price, lists to marketing companies that include a great deal about our lives. It is from these lists that marketing companies target their mailings and phone calls. I get at least 1 or 2 pre-approved credit card offers a week. Do I bank at any of these card companies? No. Did I ask to open a new line of credit? No. But here is this offer nonetheless, waiting for my signature to complete the account creation. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Think about this: how does Company X, who I have no relationship with, know that it is really me who completes the form? Do they know my signature? I doubt they can verify this, and frankly, I doubt they care. They're hoping I'm gonna max out the limit they're offering and pay 20% interest for 25 years while I try to pay off my careless purchases anyway. So what can be done? These offers are fodder for credit thieves. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is where reading the fine print is helpful. I chose a credit bureau, <b>Experian</b>, and found the privacy policy at the bottom of their website. I began reading their policy and found it begins with some flowery language about how they take my privacy seriously, but suggest many people like buying items from their home and so they offer our information to marketing companies to facilitate this convenience. Never mind I didn't ask for it and have proven able to sign up for specific companies' mailings myself. The magazines and other relatively harmless junk mail aren't my real concern, it is the credit card offers (although it is true that if everyone opted out a great deal of paper would be saved, too). </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
While a legal endeavor, the fact that these transactions continue reek of a conflict of interest. Where do we report an instance of identity theft? Credit bureaus. Who is selling bits of our personal lives to third parties? Credit bureaus. But, as Experian admits: we have a choice. If you're uncomfortable knowing your information is being sold, or you simply wish to reduce your junk mail visit Experian's <a href="http://www.experian.com/privacy/opting_out.html" target="_blank">Opting Out</a> page or call<b> 1-888-5-OPT-OUT</b>. </div>

While managing one's personal finances is a significant responsibility, many Americans find themselves responsible for the financial decisions of others. Whether it's an aging parent who needs financial guidance or a friend who is sick or injured, it's no easy task. Thankfully, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau has recently published a set of documents to help those who are helping others with their finances. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Covering four main topics: Powers of Attorney, Court Appointed Guardianship, Trustees, and Government Fiduciaries, I highly recommend reading or saving electronic copies of these guides for future reference.<br />

If money is a means to an end, whats your end?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
Thanks to <a href="http://www.forbes.com/" target="_blank">Forbes</a>, I have been introduced to a fantastically practical and already popular blog <a href="http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/" target="_blank">Mr. Money Mustache</a>. Funny name, yes, but don't let that fool you, this blog is serious about money - saving money. This blog is the ongoing story of one Colorado family (a couple and their child) who set out to retire at age 30 and how they saved enough money ($800,000) to do so. I want to talk a little about their particular situation and how they value money. It's fairly uncommon and frankly, a little extreme, but it has greatly affected me this week. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The blog has a wide following and Mr. Mustache (yes, he refers to himself as this) has been featured on a number of outlets, including <a href="http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/07/23/a-4-minute-video-inside-the-mmm-household/" target="_blank">Yahoo's Financial Fit</a> segments. Mr. Stach and his wife decided that they wanted children, but that working full time would interfere with child rearing, so they set out to retire <i>then</i> have children. At age 30 he and his wife retired with enough savings to live off the dividends and interest while leaving the principal intact. While they initially calculated that they would need $600,000 to do this, they eventually retired with the $800,000 I mentioned earlier, more than they actually need. <br />
<br />
How is this possible? After all, they had only worked for <i>9 years</i> after college. The specifics of their situation and exactly what they did will explain how this was possible. <br />
<br />
<b>1. He graduated from college with no student debt.</b> I am not sure about Mrs. Stache. This is a huge bonus for any recent grad. Having no student debt meant they could essentially begin to save larger amounts immediately, eventually saving nearly 70% of their income each year. <br />
<br />
<b>2. They had excellent tech jobs.</b> While they started out at on average $40K salaries, they eventually made between $70K and $125K each year. This type of salary increase alone will ensure this process takes more than 9 years for other couples. Toward the end of his (short tech career) he admits he felt like a big shot; being put up in great hotels, greeted by Town cars, and driven around while on business is no doubt food for anyone's ego. More about his view of wealth later.<br />
<br />
<b>3. They had only one child.</b> Clearly having more than one child would seriously increase monthly expenses, although with the passing down of clothes and other things, I suppose it might be lower than immediately thought (although insurance and college remain). <br />
<br />
<b>4. Probably most important: they seriously minimized their expenses.</b> This means never buying a new car, stocking up at the store during sales, and avoiding unnecessary impulse purchases. You live in an area of the country where rental rates or home prices are high? This family purposely moved to a city in Colorado known for low cost of living. Here again many people would say, well, I need to be close to my job, which happens to be in X expensive city. His response is that most people living in large cities don't actually need to live there to work in their field, that essentially it is a choice. I think for many people this is true: think of all the other places people in a similar career path to yours are employed. I can be a librarian in Michigan and pay $600 a month for rent, or I could live in Boston, pay $1000 in rent, and be doing essentially the same job. Over 10 years that $400 difference is $48,000, with no consideration for the interest it could gain if invested. <br />
<br />
When asked if they went without or felt out of place during their savings frenzy, they say no, they had dinner parties and did many of the same things as their friends. They believe if we stuck to what we really needed, rather than what we wanted or <i>thought</i> we needed, we could greatly reduce our monthly expenses. Rather than <i>demonstrating</i> in some perceptible way that they were amassing wealth, they simply saved and didn't allow themselves to be lured into the mentality that equates luxury with wealth. Mr. Stache <a href="http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/08/29/luxury-is-just-another-weakness/" target="_blank">equates luxury to a drug</a> that when taken regularly can ruin your life. <br />
<br />
Travel expenses are high and this might be one of the more extreme aspects to this family: Mr. Stache doesn't allow anyone to drive a car if the destination is somewhere in their city. Even after "retiring," this remains a policy, and if you watch the yahoo video you will see this in action. Bikes are free, so they bike around town. This is not to say that they scrimp in all areas of their life and live in a cardboard box. Until recently, they lived in a $400,000 house. But, last month they bought a <a href="http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/09/23/rebuilding-our-new-old-house-want-to-help/" target="_blank">new house</a> which is not only much cheaper, but smaller by 1,000 sq. ft. Even in retirement they remain committed to reducing expenses. Reducing costs and extras seems to have become their lifestyle even after securing their financial future. <br />
<br />
I read financial advice every week and nobody will tell you that the secret of being wealthy, or gaining financial security, is simply increasing your salary. The correlation just isn't necessarily there. Even those with modest incomes can save large amounts of money and live very comfortably (maybe even <i>more</i> comfortably) in retirement. This is where, in my view, this family differs from many others. Rather than viewing money as something amassed and then enjoyed as a result of years of toil at work, and viewing retirement as a time where you can be more free with what you've worked hard for, money is merely something that has allowed them to <i>maintain</i> the frugal life they've had all along. There is no appreciable change, and if there is, it has been down- rather than up-sizing. Wealth was not sought because they wanted to be wealthy and have this or that, it was sought so they were free <i>to do something else</i> they valued, and this wasn't vacationing, but raising their child together. Mr. Stache has continued to save, and in fact is still concerned with making money. Their new, smaller house needs some upgrades for example, and yet he is clear that the whole exercise will be a significant financial gain, so the process is a "go."<br />
<br />
While his original goal was to have financial security to raise a family, I am unsure of how they think of their own wealth. Clearly they think it is useful, but at the same time they seem to boldly shed off any outward sign that they are wealthy, almost militantly appearing "not wealthy" to the casual observer. He lists some of their more expensive belongings (generally items inside their house) but seems embarrassed that they have them in the first place. Being frugal, and spending around $30,000 each year in total seems to have become their way of life, regardless of the money they're saving. Ironic that becoming wealthy has meant this family can <i>choose</i> to live modestly. I'm fascinated by this and am still thinking about the relation between the two. While living modestly is a necessity for most Americans, in this family's case, it is a <i>reflection of their values</i>. <br />
<br />
Admirably, I think, they recognize how fortunate we are as a nation and continue to believe that spending excessive amounts of money on anything unnecessary should be avoided. They just don't buy into the notion of more is better. As a society, whatever that means, we have been lead to believe that wealth should be visible in some way to the naked eye. Maybe it is successful marketing campaigns, examples we see, or something else, but many of us correlate success and wealth with more [insert material thing here]. Bill Gates has a 10,000 sq. ft. house (true story). Does he need more than 1,000 sq. ft. to live in? Absolutely not, but he can afford it, so he has it. This is not a knock at Gates, only that it illustrates that when we have the ability to pay for something we often do, as a rite of passage, or a way to reward ourselves. Even more common is the fact that many people make purchases they cannot truly afford and in the end pay a much higher price by way of interest payments. To this Mr. Stache says: "You shouldn't drive a $20,000 car if you can't afford to invest $20,000 a year." <br />
<br />
Maybe we reward ourselves because a culture exists that pushes the next (bigger) thing. Wanting what others have isn't new, or even unnatural, but maybe it is learned. I know I'm going a little out of the box for a librarian's post, but I think advice on the blog could really do some good in all our lives. Will you be the next family to retire early with a full bank account? Probably not. But maybe we could retire a little earlier and enjoy more of our time (and money) how we choose after we stop working 9-5. For the record, Mr. Stache hasn't quit working altogether, leading some to suggest he didn't retire at all, but he doesn't need to work as much as he likes doing certain things, some of which garner income. I encourage you to take a look at the blog, there's advice from saving money at the store, to choosing a credit card with the most rewards each month (keep in mind the card is still paid off every month, so the rewards really are akin to free money). I found it useful and I hope you do too.<br />
<br />
I certainly don't agree with the man 100%. I don't think his extreme message applies in every situation nor should you necessarily do as he says, but ask yourself: what purpose does money serve in my life? <br />

<b>Open Enrollment Starts October 1</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There's been a lot of talk about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and what it means for our lives. Just this morning there was talk on one of the networks that the law remained unclear to many, and understandably so, as we haven't yet seen its full effect. But you don't have to be confused! Here I want to briefly outline what the new law could mean for you and your family. The information here is from the State of Michigan and the US Government, so let's look deeper and get beyond the media hype. Understanding how insurance works is never easy, but you can be better prepared by doing a little reading before October 1. </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b>Is the government requiring all Americans to be covered by health insurance?</b><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yes, including children, beginning January 1, 2014. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All Americans must have health insurance that meet the 'minimum essential coverage' outlined <a href="http://www.irs.gov/uac/Questions-and-Answers-on-the-Individual-Shared-Responsibility-Provision" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you fail to enroll in a plan that meets the requirements you will pay a fine, described <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/what-if-someone-doesnt-have-health-coverage-in-2014/" target="_blank">here</a>, plus you will be responsible for your own medical costs. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Where do I look for my insurance options?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The ACA mandated that each state set up a healthcare 'marketplace,' the government word to describe an online location where citizens can research their options and compare plans. Think of it as shopping for insurance. The State of Michigan has opted to use the federal government's marketplace, which can be found at <a href="http://www.healthcare.gov/" target="_blank">Healthcare.gov</a>. This is where you will go online to look for insurance starting October 1. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Who is eligible to participate?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b> </b> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Starting October 1, you will be able to go through the initial process (answering some questions) to determine if you qualify for insurance from the marketplace or through another program (i.e. Medicaid). If you have coverage through your employer and you're happy with it, you can keep it, just be aware of the minimum essential coverage guidelines mentioned above. Maybe you have insurance at work but it's very expensive - the marketplace could provide you savings each month. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Many Americans do not have employer benefits such as insurance, and for those in this situation the marketplace is ideal. Maybe you make too much to qualify for medicaid and yet you've found monthly premiums through an individual plan to be too expensive at the desired coverage level. The marketplace allows you to gain the buying power and lower rates of a group plan.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>How does the ACA affect Medicaid, Medicare, and the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP)?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Excellent question! If you are currently covered by Medicare, your coverage meets federal requirements - your coverage continues uninterrupted. Medicaid and CHIP also continue as usual, and in fact Medicaid eligibility has been expanded in many states, including Michigan. Read about Medicaid eligibility <a href="http://www.medicaid.gov/Medicaid-CHIP-Program-Information/By-Topics/Eligibility/Eligibility.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/do-i-qualify-for-medicaid/#state=michigan" target="_blank">here</a>, your eligibility is based on the size of your household and family income. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>How long do I have to decide to use insurance through the marketplace?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Open Enrollment, the period during which you can sign up, starts October 1, 2013 and continues until March 31, 2014. You must apply for a plan through the marketplace during this period to be covered in 2014 by a marketplace plan. Again, if you have coverage you like or are on Medicare you don't have to sign up for a new plan. If you want coverage to start on or close to January 1, 2014 you should apply during early December or before. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>What can I do to prepare if I anticipate enrolling in a marketplace plan?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Check out this <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/downloads/MarketplaceApp_Checklist_Generic.pdf" target="_blank">application checklist</a> and think more about exactly what you'd like from your insurance plan and what you can afford to pay each month. Both of these aspects of the plan will be outline when you browse your options starting October 1. Having your Social Security Number, income information (found on your W-2s from your employer), and any current policy information will make the application process easier. Review the checklist above for more information. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For even more information check out the embedded links in this post or head over to <a href="http://www.healthcare.gov/" target="_blank">Healthcare.gov</a>. The site has many more frequently asked questions that will help you navigate your options. Remember that there will not be concrete rates available until October 1 at which point you will be able to compare coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and monthly premiums. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And finally, if you don't have home access to the internet, stop by any branch of the GDL to complete the process online. </div>

I have been thinking a lot lately about the library of the 21st century. The job descriptions of public librarians look nothing like they did in 1990, and those in 1990 looked far different from those in 1980. Things continue to change rapidly as new technologies emerge and become ubiquitous in the lives of some Americans. Have technological innovations like the internet, e-books, and databases made physical libraries unnecessary? <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><b> Public libraries are no longer primarily concerned with physical books</b>, <b>but rather information literacy</b>. While we still want to put the newest Baldacci, Connelly, and Johansen text in your hands to enjoy, this only represents a portion of our mandate as a public service to our community. What public libraries continue to obsess about, to strive for, is access to information and then how to discern what you locate, in whatever format. Some might think that the ability to "Google" something has made our job unnecessary, but in fact this ability has introduced a host of information sources which are not reliable or tested. Prior to the digital revolution it was much easier to determine whether an information source could be trusted, as a result information literacy is now critical as we sort through the unorganized mess that is the internet. Now self-publishing is common, and literally anyone can post information online (even me!). The internet has certainly made discovery easier for everyone, and a search engine remains an excellent place <i>to start </i>when doing research, but it is just that, a start. "Library Science," the degree professional librarians often obtain, has given way to "Information Science," "Informatics," and similar fields which better reflect the needs of the 21st century patron. "Library Science" reflects the print era, but today, managing our physical collections, that novel you're waiting for, is a fraction of our responsibility. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I said one of the primary concerns of the 21st century library is providing access to information, but what do I mean? According to a 2013 <a href="http://www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/p20-569.pdf" target="_blank">report</a> by the Census Bureau entitled "Computer and Internet Use in the United States," 25% (about 33 million) of American households do not have access to a computer. In addition, 29% of households do not have internet access from home. While it might seem everyone has an iPad or smartphone, it simply isn't yet the case in the US. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Divide_in_the_United_States" target="_blank">digital divide</a>, the phrase used to describe the lack of access, is particularly prevalent in the Hispanic and African-American communities where they are nearly 20% more likely to have limited home access. This lack of access is no small matter. Public libraries exist in part to fill this gap between those with access and those without. During the hardest months and years of the recession public libraries across the country were filled with people looking and applying for work online and using Microsoft Word to complete their resumes. Free access to this and similar technology remains critical as many in the workforce seek to update their skills. <br />
<br />
<b>Public libraries are no longer silent tombs with cranky librarians "shushing" those who dare break the silence, but rather vibrant community centers bustling with activity. </b>Close your eyes and think of a librarian. What do you visualize? Glasses, dowdy, uptight, out of touch. Accurate...maybe in 1850. Librarians have long stood for freedom of speech, equality, and literacy. We strive to be unbiased and provide the widest possible lens on the world via what you find on our shelves. We really do hand-pick our items, it's not automated. It will come as no surprise to anyone who has been in the Grand Blanc branch lately to know that public libraries are no longer silent. Sure, we have rooms for silent study, and we want to be that place away from home to get work done. That said, we are open to the public, and every day after school you will find multiple tutors helping local students succeed at school, entrepreneurs discussing their business plans, and librarians explaining our resources and services. While the library is a conversation-filled place, and a place where respect is paramount, silence cannot be guaranteed outside the study rooms so don't feel uncomfortable talking.<br />
<br />
<b>Think of librarians as "waiting for my question" rather than people who "don't want to be disturbed." </b>I can't tell you how many times someone approaches me and says "I hate to bother you but..." This is really a symptom of bad PR on our part as well as the nature of what we do. Unless you look like you're looking for something, we all know the look, I probably won't disturb you. People have all sorts of things they need to accomplish and we don't wish to interfere as you go about your day. But we welcome your questions, it's a huge part of what we are trained to do. We have been asked everything - <i>everything</i> - so please don't hesitate. I have the privilege of being on a first-name basis with many of the people I see, some every day, and rightly so, public libraries often know their communities better than anyone else. <br />
<br />
While none of us can predict what the next 10 years will bring, I am confident that public libraries will continue to be one of the few free public services available to anyone who walks through our doors.<br />
<br />
We are modern. We are relevant.<br />
We are committed to enriching your life and equipping you for success. <br />

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rXCWE_xi3v8/Uitlz7pHZBI/AAAAAAAAAaE/x97CLA3aLmA/s1600/GBBCPic4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rXCWE_xi3v8/Uitlz7pHZBI/AAAAAAAAAaE/x97CLA3aLmA/s1600/GBBCPic4.jpg" height="210" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Robert T. Bolo, Jr. Business Center</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When you hear "business center" what comes to mind? My mind immediately goes to the business centers you see in airport terminals or hotels. These places are used by "business people" to print, fax, scan, make use the wireless internet, or simply use an electrical outlet to charge their phone while they are traveling. Generally self-serve and unstaffed, these locations bear little resemblance to the GDL Business Center in Grand Blanc.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
"Business Center" is somewhat of a misnomer. While we do offer all the amenities listed above that you might find in a hotel or airport terminal, we are <b>so much more</b>. Not only are we staffed 5 days each week, but the business librarian will spend considerable time with you locating the correct information. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So what types of information are available?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Information and assistance in the Business Center can be grouped into 3 categories:<br />
Small Business Assistance, Personal Finance, and Career/job Search. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j2doHu2vHoc/UiZJLY6A_pI/AAAAAAAAAY0/n_4IAqayxgk/s1600/GBBCPic3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j2doHu2vHoc/UiZJLY6A_pI/AAAAAAAAAY0/n_4IAqayxgk/s1600/GBBCPic3.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We partnered with the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC) earlier this year and were certified as a Business Resource Center. This has brought together the business center's print and online resources, with the business start-up expertise of SBTDC. Together, GDL and SBTDC can effectively help you bring your business ideas to fruition. Take a free class with SBTDC to get started, then make an appointment with the business librarian to complete the market and industry research needed for an accurate business plan.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YyvnPBgqZy8/UitecWNQ1FI/AAAAAAAAAZo/wE_T32gdzig/s1600/GBBCPic5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YyvnPBgqZy8/UitecWNQ1FI/AAAAAAAAAZo/wE_T32gdzig/s1600/GBBCPic5.jpg" height="110" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The Business Center is also well-equipped with print and online resources to assist you as you plan a family budget, learn about stock, bond, and mutual fund investing, or research a specific investment. Morningstar Research Center, the ValueLine Investment Survey, and Mergent Archives' industry reports and stock information are all available to you from your home computer with a valid library card. <br />
<br />
Are you a beginner investor? Knowing where to start is difficult, but we've got you covered! Check out Morningstar's <a href="http://library.morningstar.com/mkt/investing_for_the_long_run.pdf" target="_blank">Investing For the Long Run</a> publication then head over to GDL's <a href="http://www.thegdl.org/index.php/resources/personal-finance" target="_blank">Personal Finance</a> page for more information. You'll notice that we have included information from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) on our site. FINRA is an <i>excellent</i>, unbiased resource for financial information; they regulate the industry and don't sell financial products to consumers. Before you invest a cent read as much as possible! Knowing some investing basics will also facilitate a better conversation with a financial advisor should you choose to use one.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-knA-yq8nADs/UitgCBJxh6I/AAAAAAAAAZ0/o3dsCGf8bWw/s1600/GBBCPic6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-knA-yq8nADs/UitgCBJxh6I/AAAAAAAAAZ0/o3dsCGf8bWw/s1600/GBBCPic6.jpg" height="95" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Public libraries are on the front lines of this poor job market. Our computers are in high demand, and people rely on our internet connection and Microsoft Office applications to navigate through their job search process. We support you and will do what we can to help you along the way. Need some help formatting with Microsoft Word? Not sure how to submit and online application or resume? Not sure if you need a cover letter (hint: you probably do)? Along with 1-on-1 help, the business center also stocks many resume, cover letter, and interview materials so you are well-prepared for your next opportunity. <br />
<br />
Genesee District Library has been a consistent provider of trusted information for decades. Not been to one of our 19 branches lately? Not sure if you have your library card still? No problem, just stop by one of our locations today to get a card or renew your account.<br />
<br />
Libraries aren't just about books anymore. GDL has numerous seminars, reading clubs, and children's activities scheduled throughout the year posted to our <a href="http://www.thegdl.org/index.php/events/all-events" target="_blank">events calendar</a>.<br />
<br />
As always, let us know what you're looking for and we will do our best to find it. Librarians love a challenge, so bring on your questions!</div>
